New Delhi: Ram Gopal Varma in his new film ‘Ran’ (battle) — the new(s) war — has sought to explore the media and how he thinks it is manipulated. That’s what he claimed at a press conference in the city on Wednesday.
In the run-up to the interaction, there were promises of a ‘‘revelation’’ that would make it a ‘‘news story’’ and not just another filmy do. As it turned out, true to his reputation of raking up controversies, Ramu had based the theme song on the national anthem — it started with ‘‘Jana Gana Mana’’ and then went on to lyrics relevant to the film set to the original tune.
What followed was more interesting. There were frantic calls from the PR agency asking us whether this would be carried as a news item. On being answered in the negative, there was a plaintive plea from the PR person: ‘‘But don’t you think it deserves to be written about, given that the national anthem has been tampered with?’’ The anxiety in the voice was palpable.
Varma, in order to seek publicity for the film that explores the working of the forces that make or break news, seems to have himself — or was it his producer Madhu Mantena known for Ghajini — triggered events that seek to do the same.
